One of my most favorite merienda snacks are squid balls and fish balls! Specially the ones from the street! Hehehe... But if you live where I do, squid/fish ball vendors come scarce. Anyhoo, Googling endlessly for the recipe that comes close to the ones in the street, this recipe I found in the internet was the closest one! (Read On by clicking Read More -->)
Yield: Makes about 2 cups

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup water
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp cornstarch
1 tsp all purpose flour
2 Tbsps soy sauce
2 pcs garlic cloves (minced)
1/2 small onion (minced)
fresh chili (sili) -Optional

1. Fry the squid balls and set aside. Now this one is tricky. I haven't found the perfect squid balls yet. I have tried all brands in the supermarket, and nothing has come close to the ones in the street. These are Senorito, they are not good. But anyway...

In a sauce pan, combine the water, sugar, cornstarch, all purpose flour, and soy sauce. Bring to a boil until the sauce is thick.

While the sauce is boiling, prepare the garlic and onion. Chop them together in a chopper to save time. Make sure they are really minced well.

As soon as the sauce has thickened, add the onions and garlic. If you want a more garlicky taste, add more. And add sili if you want it spicy.

When the sauce reached the right consistency, a nice thick sauce, taste it and adjust it accordingly. I personally like it to be sweeter so I added more sugar. If you want it more salty, add salt, not soy sauce.

Pour over your squid balls or put in a bowl on the side.
