The first ever recipe I would like to share with you is the Oatmeal Peanut Butter Treats. I tasted them and it actually doesn't taste that bad. Although pet treats have milder taste than regular human cookies because too much sugar and salt are bad for your pet. A small amount won't hurt, but if you can avoid them altogether, the better. I love these treats because it has a soft center and won't break your dog's teeth. I love that it smells so good when it's baking that Mylo went crazy when it was time to take the treats out of the oven. *DING!*
Let me tell you about the special ingredients that I used:
WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR VS. REGULAR FLOUR - I used whole weat flour instead of white flour because sometimes white flour are bleached to make it stark white. I wasn't sure if my white flour was bleached or not so I bought whole wheat flour from Healthy Options.
SUPERMARKET PEANUT BUTTER VS. ORGANIC PEANUT BUTTER FROM HEALTHY OPTIONS - According to the recipe, any peanut butter should be ok but I didn't want to risk it. Plain supermarket brand peanut butter contains oil, sugar and water (even the respectable, big brands), and some "organic" peanut butter contain salt. I didn't want to take my chances so I went to Healthy Options to check for an all-natural peanut butter. True enough, their peanut butter just contained 100% peanuts! No oil, flavoring, coloring, salt or sugar so this is what I bought.
VANILLA FLAVORING - They say that Vanilla Flavoring is ok with pets, but according to some, coloring and flavoring is OK as long as they didn't contain alcohol. Oil or water based products only. When I read the ingredients label on the McCormick Vanilla Flavoring, I saw that it contained alcohol, so I removed this from the recipe. If you can find one that is 100% natural, then all the better!
So now we got that out of the way, let's start baking!
YIELD: about 24-30 treats (this is measured by using 1tsp drops on cookie sheet)
3/4 cup flour (or wheat flour)
1 whole egg
1 Tbsp natural pure honey
1 tsp peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable shortening (I used Crisco pure vegetable shortening in butter flavor)
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup rolled oats
1/2 tsp vanila
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 deg
1. Put the honey and the peanut butter into a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 20 seconds. While it's hot, mix together well with a whisk.
2. In a mixing bowl or a kitchen aid, put all the remaining ingredients and mix. Do not over beat. I found that the batter mix is so thick that it sticks to the kitchen aid whisk so I decided to use my hands to mix it well.
3. Line your baking sheets with wax paper. Some use a non-stick butter baking spray but that is just added ingredients to your dog's treats so just use the wax paper.
4. Drop the dough by spoonfuls (I used a 1 tsp measuring spoon) onto a baking sheet.
Note: Here's where you adjust the size of the biscuit for the size of your pet.
Bake for only 8 minutes at proper temperature.
I experimented on my first batch of biscuits by not flattening the drops. I thought that the biscuits would eventually flatten, but they just remained the same size as when they were dropped. So when you drop the batter onto the sheets, drop and flatten them to make bite-size type cookie biscuits!
